We started at the home of Mayor Heinrich Toppler, Rothenburg's second-most-famous mayor (after Mayor Georg Nusch, the one claimed to have saved the town in the Meistertrunk story). Toppler is responsible for the wealth of Rothenburg. He bought as much land as he could from indebted landed gentry and had their castles razed, expanding the town and making the roads safe for merchants. He also became personally wealthy as a result.
