travel log
The museum digs deeper into each aspect of this process, but this chart provides a nice overview of the medieval legal system. In many ways, the proceedings are not dissimilar from our modern trials: questioning of witnesses (corroborating witness testimony was important as well; a solitary witness was usually not sufficient), testimony of experts under oath, interrogating the accused, eliciting a voluntary confession and attempting to validate it. A glaring addition, however: forced confession through torture. Minus the torture angle, this sounds like a courtroom today.
