travel log
These fascinating illustrations demonstrate a method for resolving a criminal accusation between a man and a woman. If there were no witnesses, the court would not adjudicate the dispute. Instead, the woman could demand a duel. The man would be confined to a hole, with one arm bound behind his back. The woman would have free movement. Whomever won this contest of strength and cunning would be declared the victor, and the other would be punished by the court. This method of duel was considered "divine judgment" because it was believed God would assist the Right Party.
