Finally arriving in Rothenburg, it's now about noon, really highlighting how getting that 8am train is critical for this to be a feasible daytrip. We entered the old town at Galgentor (Gallows Gate), so named because in medieval times the town gallows sat in the square where we are standing now, just outside the town walls.
