This process didn't go well at first. The US military government in Germany immediately began to try to "de-Nazify" the populace, in particular removing all imagery related to the party, dissolving the formal party structure, and dismissing civil servants from various government posts who were aligned with the Nazis, as well as from business leadership. Many Germans resisted this.
