One such person was Munich lawyer Kurt Christmann, who led "Special Commando 10a," which killed tens of thousands of Jews, Roma, invalids, and Communists. After the war, the Vatican helped him escape to Argentina. He returned to Germany in 1956 and lived peacefully until a Munich court finally decided to get around to trying a case against him in 1980. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
