Most town squares in Bavaria have a maypole, and it features prominently in their May Day celebrations. They kill many people to successfully crown their May Queen. Or, they don't. But people from other towns do try to steal their rivals' maypole throughout the year. If the pole is successfully stolen, it is ransomed with beer, and apparently the medieval courting ritual of assigning the most dashing and handsome bachelors the job of putting it back up, while all the single ladies swoon, lives on today.
