Continuing on our Steveswalk, we made our way to this small square where we learn about Salzburg's 12th-century water system, which still functions today. A canal system channels water to Salzburg from the Alps (about 10 miles away). This Alpine water was used to clean the streets and otherwise keep Salzburg hygienic. As a result, Mozart's hometown is one of the very few in Austria to never have reported any cases of plague.
