Acid attacks are what they sound like: an attacker throws acid (usually sulfuric or nitric) into the face of a victim, permanently disfiguring them but only rarely with fatal result. The motivation for the attacker is usually jealousy, often related to a rejected sexual advance or declined marriage proposal. The intent is to make the person "ugly" and ruin their future romantic chances as revenge for declining theirs.
