The formal name of the mosque, Masjid-i-Jehān-Numā (bestowed by Emperor Shah Jahan) means "mosque that reflects the whole world." Jāmā Masjid is an entirely colloquial name meaning "congregational mosque." This is the name used by commoners. It's pretty much the de facto name of the mosque now. Even the nearby metro station bears this proletariat name.
