On the way to our destination, we passed through Green Point again. Off the coast of Mouille Point Beach, we saw the engine block of the RMS Athens sticking out of the water. Royal Mail Ship Athens was wrecked during a storm in 1865. This occurred at night, after the Athens' boiler fires were extinguished during a the storm while trying to steam out of Table Bay. Prior to the wreck, the Athens had been anchored in preparation for a voyage to Mauritius. These days intrepid divers find this a relatively easy and accessible shipwreck dive.
