travel log
This project was important because of Cape Town's reputation as the Port of Storms. In June of 1858 these storms wrecked over 30 ships wintering in Table Bay. Lloyds of London, a major insurer, actually refused to cover ships spending the winter off the coast of Cape Town. This spurred Prince Alfred to begin the project of building a safe harbor for ships here: to be an eye in the storm.
