I mentioned Gandhi earlier but as we view this statue of him in the CBD, I should point out that his time in South Africa was very extensive. He lived here from 1893 to 1914, originally accepting a one-year contract to serve as lawyer for the cousin of an Indian man who owned a South Africa-based shipping company. He ended up staying for 21 years and, facing intense racial discrimination as an Indian in South Africa, spent much of that time fighting for civil rights here.
