The protests were not immediately successful. The Department of Bantu Education (basically the department of education for blacks) clung to its Afrikaans edict. This and other aspects of apartheid inspired a campaign of international sanctions against South Africa. In 1979, the Bantu Education Act was repealed, allowing English and native language instruction in black schools. However, racially-segregated schools continued.
