I took the Metro to Giza station. The Metro in Cairo is one of only two Metro systems in Africa, the other being a yet-unopened system in Algiers. It is very busy, and not very extensive - there are only two lines, basically one north-south and one east-west, though there are plans to build two more lines including one that will connect to Cairo Airport. Nonetheless, it is a bargain at only 1 Egyptian pound per ride (about $0.20 US) Now I needed to hail a taxi from here to the hotel. Although I was much closer now than before, it was still a bit of a jog and I knew it would be tough for a driver to get a fare back into town. As expected, the first taxi I hailed wouldn't make the trip. But the second one did without any additional demands. As I knew to hail a taxi with a meter so I wouldn't be ripped off in negotiations, I expected the driver to request a bit more than the meter to help since he probably couldn't get a fare back into town. He didn't, so I offered him a little bit more anyway upon arrival, just to be nice. Thus concludes my first day of Egyptian adventure.
