travel log
Our first evening in Petra I entered the site by night, an activity that is organized by the tourist authorities three times a week. In the past, there weren't many restrictions on entry into Petra and anyone could go in at night, and even camp inside! But UNESCO's World Heritage Site award came along with additional regulations and restrictions. Now the park has restrictive hours and the only way to get in at night is during this special event. They light the path to the Treasury (pictured later) by candle, serve a cup of sweet Bedouin tea to you, and play a bit of Bedouin music. It's definitely worth doing, but a little over-rated. Maybe I just got unlucky though because nobody seemed to follow the "no-talking" rule clearly laid out before departure.
