One such internee led us to what remained of what once was a garden and koi pond (the "koi" in the pond were actually likely other species of carp or catfish, as that is what they had access to) built by families whose parents had once been gardeners and farmers. Many projects like this were undertaken voluntarily by internees to try to cheer up and dress up the otherwise barren landscape of Amache, to try to bring a sense of home to this place.
