Walking through the thick brush itself was actually a powerful experience. Unlike many well-preserved ruins, visiting Amache really felt like history was trying to reclaim and bury the memory of this tragic chapter. Everywhere we looked there was evidence of the lives which had been imprisoned here. We ourselves became archaeologists as we discovered broken pottery, and as you can see in this photo, a child's marble, in the thicket.
