As we pulled into the site, the voice of presumably John Hopper himself provided context for what we were about to see. 120,000 people of Japanese descent were placed into concentration camps such as Amache in 1942. Two thirds of these folks were native born US citizens. Amache was actually the smallest of the ten WRA camps established, housing a peak population of 7,318.
