Panguitch is famous for the Quilt Walk, an 1863 historical/legendary event where out-of-food settlers tried to head to Gunnison to obtain provisions, but found their way blocked by deep drifts of snow they could not pass. The men laid a quilt on the snow to kneel and pray, and discovered that the quilt supported their weight, so they laid one quilt blanket after another to create a path for them to pass through the snow. This event is honored throughout town, including these quilts next to historical markers on downtown corners.
