The seats were actually very comfortable, and reclined quite far (unfortunately, sleeping was still difficult on account of the constantly jerking brakes that would kick in every half hour or so). Those of us who had foregone the upgrade bonded during our train journey and formed a loose friend group that would persist throughout the rest of the trip. While we were friendly enough with the "softies" (as we called them), a kind of clique had definitely formed among us.
