Egyptian authorities frown upon taking tourists to the City of the Dead and other impoverished areas because they feel it will give a bad impression of the country, presumably from an economic standpoint. But I found it wonderful, and love traveling to places like this, where real people live, as opposed to only seeing people who make their living from tourism. The people here were charming and welcoming.
