travel log
There was a pleasant "pocket park" called the Dutch Kills Green. I spent some time on one of these benches. "Kill" is Dutch for creek, so when Dutch immigrants settled in Long Island City around a small tributary of the Newtown Creek (which itself separates Queens from Brooklyn), this neighborhood got that name. In fact, the Schuylkill River in Philly shares this etymology; the Schuylkill River's name translates as "hidden river river."
