We briefly swung by the visitor center to get oriented. We actually considered for a hot minute (during planning) not even renting a car and instead taking a bus from Portland to Bangor, another from Bangor to Bar Harbor, and then this Island Explorer bus to get around Acadia. But, it wasn't really practical.
