Just outside the city walls is the Surdibi Cemetery, where several of Muhammad's "apostles" are said to be buried. They were originally in unmarked graves, but Sultan Mahmut II decided to try to identify their graves as a show of faith to tell off critics who claimed he was an enemy of Islam.
