As I said, I felt this museum edged me further from pacifism than any museum ever has before or since. It very strongly conveyed the desire of the Flemish to defend their homeland. But it did so while viscerally conveying the horrors of war at a level more human and intimate than I have ever experienced. That a museum could leave me walking away feeling I better understand not only the horror of war but also that it may at times be necessary is the mark of a true masterpiece.
