As was common in Italian homes, the open-air courtyard served as an al fresco living room of sorts for the extended Medici family. Steves says the following about this statue: "Orpheus (who calmed wild animals with his harp) reminded visitors that the Medici family calmed wild Florence with civilized and soothing politics."
