The legend was that if the Flame ever went out, Rome would fall. This did somewhat come to pass: Theodosius I extinguished the Sacred Flame in 394 due to the rise of Christianity. He died the following year, and while Rome did not immediately fall, his death is considered by many to be the pivotal event that set into motion that inevitable decline as Theodosius' two incompetent sons struggled against one another for control.
