The basilica's high altar is tiny (it's the small rectangular marble slab in this photo) so to draw more attention to it, Bernini designed this massive "baldachin" aka "God's four-poster bed" as Steves calls it. The underside of the baldachin's roof depicts the Holy Spirit in sunburst. Supposedly Peter's tomb is directly beneath this altar.
