ESCEE.com - 2015 - Day V: The Garden District and Esplanade Avenue - 1/19
travel log
We started our last day in the Garden District, which is where Americans settled in the early 19th century (the French Quarter was settled by Creoles during French and Spanish colonialism). Creoles barred Americans from settling in the Quarter, so the Americans built their own over-the-top ostentatious and sprawling Garden District which starkly contrasted with the crowded and dense Quarter. This is the Briggs-Staub House, which is the only Gothic Revival house in the District, since Gothic architecture reminded many Americans of those detested Creoles.
