Here is Cortes de la Frontrera. Lots of the white hill towns have the suffix "de la Frontrera" (one of the most popular is Arcos de la Frontrera) Apparently these towns were established on the front line of the centuries-long fight to recapture Spain from the Muslims. "la Frontera" is "the frontier" or the border with the Moorish-occupied territory. Granada, in fact, where we're going, was the last stronghold of the Moors before they were finally pushed back into Africa.
