Once he moved in, the reno began, and his inspiration was Granada's Alhambra (which we'll see later on this trip). Hence why the style is so Moorish. The palace centers on a long reflecting pool; it's typical of the Moorish style, which often centers water. The upper levels of the palace weren't added until the 16th century by Charles V, and those upper levels are where the royalty live today.
