travel log
This would be our first introduction to Islamic architecture on this trip (my second after Cairo), and wow. This beautifully decorated niche is where the imam would stand to read scripture and deliver his sermon. His back would be to the congregation, and the acoustic design of the space would ensure his words reached the crowd. The mihrab is stunning, unbelievably detailed. It dates to the mid-10th century.
