travel log
The first interior site we visited was the library. Philbert valued learning, and this library was where monks studied so that they could defend their beliefs against heretical Protestant theology. The armillary sphere, which we saw in mural form back in Lisbon, makes a real life appearance here. It was a crank-operated mechanical device which would demonstrate the rotation of celestial bodies around the Earth, which was believed to be the center of the universe.
