The spires above the Passion Facade were based on Gaudi plans, but the facade itself was only inspired by Gaudi, and its design - by Josep María Subirachs - is controversial. The style is severe, blocky, and simple, which is quite different from Gaudi's typical exuberant playful over-the-top Rococo style. There's symbolism throughout; Jesus' hair is supposed to resemble an open book, representing the Word of God.
