Catalonians are fiercely patriotic and many reject any form of Spanish identity. In fact, in 2017 (five years after our visit), Catalonians overwhelming (92%-8%) voted to secede from Spain and form their own independent republic. The Catalan government even authored and disseminated a declaration of independence. None of this was recognized by the Spanish government or the international community.
