To start, I think that Rayman
2 is a great game and an enjoyable platform experience. It was
originally released to the N64 and PC, followed by Dreamcast,
and then Playstation. Such a game that was released to all four
major platforms gradually must be popular as there must be demands
for the additional releases.
Graphics
The graphics are amazing for
a game of this genre. Rayman 2 is possibly the best-looking
platformer so far. The game looks great on the N64, PC, and
Dreamcast. The Playstation game looks slightly lower quality,
but for a Playstation game, the graphics are still very good.
Sound
The sound effects fit in well
with the game's atmosphere, and the music only contributes to
the overall experience of the game. However, because of the
game's French origins, Rayman talks only in French. The subtitles
are easy enough to read and they keep up with the speech, however.
But I would have liked to see an option for voiceovers, if just
to hear Rayman talk in English.
Gameplay
Even though the graphics are
what might draw you into the game, the gameplay is where is
really shines. The difficulty of the game gradually increases,
from the introductory first level to the final confrontation.
And the levels themselves are very large and enjoyable. Many
levels sport a completely different style of play, from tradition
platforming, to nonstop sliding downward; from flying in the
air, to searching for switches. The only thing about the gameplay
I didn't like was the inability to save at any time. There are
ponits in each level where you can always respawn even after
a game over, but you still cannot save your game at these points.
Control
Controlling Rayman is easy enough,
but sometimes the camera angles cut completely, changing your
direction by 90 degrees. This has killed me more than once.
The camera itself is actually very well done, but the drastic
cuts are a problem.
Lastability
Although you can go back to get
all the Lums, the levels just aren't as fun after you've already
beaten them. The Dreamcast version has a multiplayer game which
adds a lot to the lastability, but this feature is not in the
PC version. Still, the game is long enough to keep you entertained
and definately worth the buy.
